چکیده

W E REPORTED EARLIER1 that scorbutic guinea pigs showed normocytic and normochromic anemia with normoblastic reaction of bone marrow, diminished plasma iron, decreased iron binding capacity of plasma, increased free erythrocyte protopofl)hyrin and a low sideroblast percentage with high hemosiderin content of bone marrow. These changes could not be attributed to inanition, intestinal hemorrhage, defective absorption of iron or intravascular hemolysis. The observations indicated defective utilization of iron in the scorbutic condition. Therapeutic response to iron in cases of anemia of scurvy, without simultaneous administration of ascorbic acid, had been reported2 which, however, could not be confirmed by others.3’4 The present report deals with the effect of administration of iron on the hematologic picture and tissue iron distribution in the scorbutic guinea pig.

Studies on the operation of the tricarboxylic acid cycle in scurvy.

Dickmann and Cloutier (1) observed that aconitase is stabilized and activated by ferrous iron and reducing agents such as ascorbic acid or cysteine. This led Takeda and Hara (2) to study the urinary excretion of citric acid and ketone bodies in scorbutic and oc,oc’-dipyridyl-injected guinea pigs after the animals were fed butyrate. These animals excreted increased amounts of citric acid and ket...

Ascorbic acid is essential for the release of insulin from scorbutic guinea pig pancreatic islets.

Pancreatic islets from young normal and scorbutic male guinea pigs were examined for their ability to release insulin when stimulated with elevated D-glucose. Islets from normal guinea pigs released insulin in a D-glucose-dependent manner showing a rapid initial secretion phase and three secondary secretion waves during a 120-min period. Islets from scorbutic guinea pigs failed to release insul...

Effect of scurvy on cholesterol and ascorbic acid in guinea pig adrenals.

It has been shown earlier (1) that the metabolism of carbohydrate is disturbed in scorbutic guinea pigs as evidenced by diminished glucose tolerance, deposition of liver glycogen, and insulin content of the pancreas. Although the adrenalin content of the adrenals of scorbutic guinea pigs is increased, it has been shown by removing the adrenal medulla that adrenalin is not responsible for the lo...

Elevation of alcohol dehydrogenase activity in the subclinically scorbutic guinea-pig.

1. Because it has been shown that a majority of alcoholics are subclinically scorbutic, the metabolism of ethanol was studied in subclinically-scorbutic guinea-pigs. 2. Hepatic alcohol dehydrogenase activity was raised maximally by ethanol within 2 days. 3. In twenty-three subclinically-scorbutic guinea-pigs fed ethanol for 2 weeks, the alcohol dehydrogenase activity (& SD) was 11.5 +_ 1.2 unit...

Relation of Scurvy to the Adrenalin Content of the Adrenal Glands of Guinea Pigs

It has been reported from this laboratory (1) that a deficiency of vitamin C in guinea pigs leads to changes in carbohydrate metabolism, as evidenced by glycosuria, a diabetic type of the glucose tolerance curve, and depletion of the glycogen content of the liver. We have also found that there is a fall in the insulin content of the pancreas (2), an increase in the size and also the number of i...
